PARKING

Devonshire Park

Parking is at a premium during the week-long tournament, with traffic wardens out in force to swiftly deal with anyone dumping their vehicles on double yellow lines and/or private properties – you have been warned! There are two NCP car parks located at Ashford Road and Trinity Place respectively, plus a special makeshift car park at the Saffrons Cricket Ground in Meads Road. All three car parks are linked to Devonshire Park by a special shuttle service bus during the tournament.

TOP PLAYERS COMPETING

Svetlana Kuznetsova (RUS)

Svetlana Kuznetsova, who won the 2004 title at Eastbourne on her debut, has a fantastic record at Devonshire Park with semi-final spots on her other two appearances in 2005 and 2006. Grass suits the Monaco-based Russian, who has reached three quarter-finals at Wimbledon and as a regular top five player is always a force to be reckoned with. Best at Eastbourne .// Champion 2004

Marion Bartoli (FRA)

Marion Bartoli, last year's Wimbledon finalist, will be returning to Devonshire Park this year. The 23-year-old French ace will be making a fifth consecutive appearance at Eastbourne. Last year she defeated Russia's Elena Dementieva in the last eight before bowing out to Justine Henin. Bartoli got revenge for that defeat by beating Henin in the Wimbledon semi-finals. Best at Eastbourne .// Semi-finalist 2007

Vera Zvonareva (RUS)

Vera Zvonareva made an instant impact in her career, which seems to be hitting a resurgence for the glamorous Russian after her dizzy heights of world no9 in 2004. That was the year that the avid baseliner raced to the semi-finals at Devonshire Park and followed it up with a career-best fourth round appearance at Wimbledon. Won her sixth WTA Tour title at Prague in May 2008. Best at Eastbourne .// Semi-finals 2004

Nadia Petrova (RUS)

Nadia Petrova retired from last year's semi-final with a pectoral muscle strain, which prevented her from improving on the best ever showing at Devonshire Park. The baseliner boasts an impressive grass court record, although has never surpassed the quarter-final stage at SW19. Desperate for a dramatic change in fortunes if she is ever going to add to her seven WTA Tour titles. Best at Eastbourne .// Semi-finals 2007

Lindsay Davenport (USA)

Returned to the WTA Tour last year following an 11-month absence due to giving birth to her only child, and has won four tournaments since to take her career tally to 55 titles. Former world no1 has a hat-trick of Grand Slams – the US Open (1998), Wimbledon (1999) and the Australian Open (2000). Best at Eastbourne .// Champion 2001

Amelie Mauresmo (FRA)

Has consistently been one of the best players on the WTA Tour over the past decade, by finishing in the world top 20 for nine consecutive years and an ex-world no1. Winner of two Grand Slam titles in 2006, the Australian Open and Wimbledon, and 22 other career singles titles. Best at Eastbourne .// Runner-up 2007

WORLD RANKINGS

2007 PLAYER OF THE TOURNAMENT

Justine Henin (BEL)

The top seed dropped just one set, and that was on a tiebreak in the final, to maintain her unbeaten record at Eastbourne. In her only previous visit to Devonshire Park, the world no1 picked up the title but blew hot and cold in her opening two outings on Centre Court. After pulling out all the stops and big shots with an emphatic 6-2 6-2 quarter-final win over Czech ace Nicole Vaidisova in 57 minutes, the Belgian brushed aside France's nervy Marion Bartoli in a one-sided semi-final 6-1 6-3. This was a formidable achievement as Bartoli had reeled off 11 successive games to humiliate Russian Elena Dementieva at the quarter-final stage. Mauresmo, Henin's opponent in the final, raced into a swift 4-1 lead only to lose 7-5 but comprehensively won the tiebreak in the second set and was within sight of victory courtesy of a 5-3 lead. Henin took full advantage of Mauresmo's change of tactics to serve-and-volley tactics when serving for the title at 5-4. Henin went on the attack to leave Mauresmo, admittedly short of match practice, so distressed at being forced to a decisive tiebreak that the reigning Wimbledon champion choked 7-2. The appreciative crowd gave the players a standing ovation after a thrilling 165-minute match of the highest quality. Henin admitted: "I was pleased today to win. It was important for me to come here to Eastbourne. The positive thing about this week was that I was able to get onto the grass and find my rhythm before Wimbledon."

WHERE TO SIT ON CENTRE COURT

Tickets are divided into three tiers, and generally are more expensive the closer you are to the action, The West Stand is popular with regulars, as it on the side of the Centre Court and attracts the local sunshine all day (so bring your sun lotion). The South Stand is the most popular, behind the baseline, and as well as plenty of sunshine it attracts a vocal crowd. The East Stand sees a more reserved but civilised bunch. but once the sun starts dropping leaves fans shivering in the shade. Finally, for the same view as the TV cameras there is the North Stand. Tickets are usually available on the day here, except for the semi-finals and finals, and is where the players entourage and coaches sit to write their notes.
